Photo Courtesy of The Plaza The holidays are nearly here and with them comes the announcement of The Plaza Hotel's Second Annual Celebrity-Designed Tree. This year, the 18-foot tree will exude a Jazz Age magic inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s new film, The Great Gatsby, as designed by Oscar winner Catherine Martin. The towering tree uses approximately 100 pounds of glass, gold and silver ornaments created by Restoration Hardware and encased by glimmering, floating snowflakes to create the 1920s ambience inspired by the film.
Catherine Martin says: “The Plaza has become a very special place to me since we began the endeavor to recreate a suite on the sound stage of Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” particularly because it is the setting for one of the quintessential scenes of the film. The Plaza was the ultimate glamorous hotel destination of the social world in the 1920s and held a special place in F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald’s hearts. I'm honored to have been asked to design such an iconic holiday tree and look forward to future collaborations with The Plaza and paying tribute to the history of this landmark New York hotel and its role in “The Great Gatsby.”
