A report conducted by industry experts and booking site Hotels.com reveals that Russia has become the second fastest growing outbound travel market. Last year alone, Russians spent $43 billion on international travel, making it the fifth largest foreign travel market in the world. The number of tourists has jumped from 7.7 million in 2006 to 35.7 million in 2012, and is projected to continue growing an average of 7.5 percent each year to 2017.
"The meteoric rise of Russia's outbound travel market is providing a welcome boost to hoteliers worldwide, with Russians among the highest spenders on hotel rooms globally,” said President of the Hotels.com Johan Svanstrom. “The rising size and spending power of middle class travelers is a key driver behind this growth. Standing 104 million strong today, the group is set to account for 86 percent of the country's population by 2020, with a combined spending power of $1.3 trillion.
With a population of 140 million, hoteliers have been coming up with ways to tap into even more of the Russian travel market. Many have decided to make Russian tourists feel more comfortable during their stay by adding Russian TV channels, hiring more Russian-speaking employees, providing translated check-in materials, offering Russian tour guides, and serving native cuisine.
