As part of The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel’s rotating art series, artist, author and filmmaker Paul Davids will be showcasing his Collaboration Portfolio at the resort from February 8 to April 30, 2014. Featuring tributes to Vincent van Gogh and Andy Warhol, Davids and fellow artist Russell Metzger created 13 three-dimensional oil paintings on canvas and wood, integrating fabrics, polished stone, dyes and epoxy resins.
“The art I create is representational, and I have not been involved (yet) in the realm of pure abstraction,” Davids said. “However, my conception of representational art is infused with abstractions as I never try to convey literally the reality the eye sees. Rather, I lend a personal interpretation to my subjects with attitudes that range from compassion to whimsy.”
Pieces entitled Chicago Moon, Twisted Cloth Canyon, 65 Million Years Ago, Meditation, The Spirit of Vincent, Andy’s Collection, the Fab Four, Windowsill Flowers, White Collar Peak, Zipper Falls, Jean’s Cove, California Dreamin’ and Northern Ice were constructed by manipulating the materials into skyscrapers, waves, cliffs, mountains, coves, clouds, and flowers.
“Paul’s exhibit is one of the most unique showings that we have featured at the resort since we opened the Art Exhibit Space in 2010,” said Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel Director of Marketing Donna Bond. “With Paul’s Hollywood notoriety, I anticipate the exhibit to be popular not only with resort guests, but art aficionado and collectors as well.”
